David C. Johnson, 64, of Salem, went home to be with Jesus on June 8, 2026, after fighting the good fight.

David was born on Aug. 7, 1961, to Carl and Shirley (Svejda) Johnson in Kenosha.   He graduated from Wilmot High School and immediately joined the U.S. Navy for 20 years and then a lateral move to the U.S. Army for 20 years. After two honorable discharges, David worked as a plumber for Colette and Ano in Antioch, Illinois.

David was a true servant of God, helping anyone who needed it and did it cheerfully.

David is survived by his two sons, Eric (Kathryn) Johnson of Lake Elsinore, California, and Ely Johnson of Salem; three sister, Carla E. Miller of Elkhorn, Karen E. (Brad) McClellan of Brodhead, and Jennifer (Mike) O’Hearn of Texas; two brothers, Mark Johnson of Brodhead, and Carl Johnson of Milwaukee. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Military service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove. A private celebration of life will be held one month later by invitation. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans).

The Apfel Wolfe Funeral Home in Janesville is assisting the family. We encourage you to share your online condolences with David’s family at www.apfelwolfe.com.

The family would like to sincerely thank Deborah DeVoss, an extended family member and high school sweetheart of David’s, who cared diligently for him in his last months,  Alden Meadows Park Skilled Nursing Facility in Clinton, who’s care was loving, tender and deeply appreciated, and Beloit Hospice who’s care was spot on. A special thank you to his neighbor and friend Kathy Mullen for the years of care while David lived at home. Without the aforementioned, we, the family, don’t know what we would have done.
