Joyce A. Mastalir, 83, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Born in Plymouth on June 30, 1942, Joyce was the daughter of Waldemar and Mildred (nee Damrow) Jochmann. Her early life was spent in Plymouth. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from UW Oshkosh and her Master’s degree in Middle School Education from UW Platteville. On July 18, 1964, in Milwaukee, she was united in marriage to Lester O. Mastalir, II. Following marriage, they made Burlington their home. She was a Burlington resident since 1970.
Joyce was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and teacher. She taught at St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School in Burlington for 31 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and Daughters of Isabella. She also was a member of the parish Liturgy Committee where for many years she recruited, trained, and scheduled the acolytes. She enjoyed reading, needle point, playing cards, crossword puzzles, Soduko, and gardening; but what she loved the most was spending quality time with her family and cheering on the Brewers and Packers.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Lester; daughters, Laura Bitzer, Ann (Jim) Webley and Rebecca (Dwayne) Haschker; grandchildren, Cassandra (Gary) Carmona; Jessica (Mike) Haney; and Jacob, Nicholas, Megan and Emma Webley; great-grandchild, Alaina Carmona; and siblings, William (Rhonda) Jochmann and Laura Shaffer. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Gary Shaffer, and sister-in-law Donna Jochmann.
The family would like to thank the Bristol rescue squad, the medical staff at the Kenosha Aurora Hospital Emergency Room, medical staff at Aurora St. Luke’s Neuro ICU, and especially Dr. Paul Webber. She also received great care and support from the Archwood Senior Living Community.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Burlington Catholic School.
