Tommy L. Jernigan, 72, of Elkhorn, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2026. He was born on April 29, 1954, in Indiana, the son of the late Lloyd F. and Martha L. (Sommer) Jernigan.

During his life, Tommy was known to be an extremely hard worker. He retired from the landfill business as a machine equipment operator. He was known as a handyman everywhere he went. Tommy enjoyed tinkering, making and fixing things. He loved fishing, hunting, and feeding wildlife. He made sure that no food went to waste and would feed the birds, squirrels and would feed deer corn. He had a big appreciation for nature and would hang birdhouses on trees. Tommy was known to be very witty and kind and people who knew him really liked him. His trademark was a $2 bills. He would give the grandkids $2 bills and 50 cent coins. He was a light in everyone’s lives. He will be missed greatly.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Linda Schmitt; children, Katie Jernigan, Heather (nee Jernigan) Brown, Jared Jernigan, Brian (Jamie) Jernigan, Hannah Jernigan, Malinda (Richard Jr.) Aney and Melissa Schmitt; brothers, Ralph (Judy) Jernigan and Dave (Storm) Jernigan; grandchildren, Nicholas (Nicki), Gerald, Dontae, Quinn, Danyelle, Julian, Brayden, Jayden, Ashlynn and Lila Jernigan, and Emily and Noah Aney; and three great grandchildren.

Tommy is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Lynn (Cash) Jernigan; parents, Lloyd and Martha Jernigan; and siblings, Mary Sue Boatman, Ruth E. Whitehead, Joe Franklin, Steve Thomas, Eugene “Scooter” Marvin and Mark Leslie.
