John “Jack” H. Kobernick, 79, of Lyons, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at his home.
Born in Waukegan, Illinois on June 22, 1946, he was the son of John and Martha (nee Kistinger) Kobernick. His early life was spent in Round Lake Park, where he graduated from Round Lake High School. He served in the Vietnam War as a Navy corpsman with the Marines 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. On June 19, 1989 in Kenosha, he was united in marriage to Theresa Kobernick. Following marriage, they made Round Lake their home before moving to Lyons 35 years ago.
Jack was a member of Christian Life Church. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and coaching softball. He loved outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing and watching baseball. He also attended reunions for his battalion, “The Walking Dead”.
Jack is survived by his wife, Theresa; children, Paul (Marta) Kobernick, Diana (Matt) Smigielski, Katlin (Keith) Gerlach and John Kobernick; grandchildren, Hudson, Landon, Elliana, Juliana and Jack; brothers, Kim (Karen) Kobernick and Mark (Iryna) Kobernick; and brother-in-law, Randy Stey He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Stey and niece Beth Brennan.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the VA with Home Base Primary Care, the Cornerstone Caregiving nurses and staff, and his Christian Life Church family for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
Services for Jack will be held Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Christian Life Church, 4521 Co Hwy F, Elkhorn. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church.
