Harry McDonald “Don” Shunk, 92, of Walworth, passed away peacefully at Vintage on the Ponds in Delavan, on Friday, Feb. 6, 2026. He was born on Dec. 14, 1933 in Rockford, Illinois, son of Harry and Blanche (McDonald) Shunk. An avid outdoorsman, Don enjoyed hunting and fishing. While a young man, he assisted his father in his sign painting business, where he developed his painting skills which he would later incorporate into creating beautiful wildlife carvings. He remained active into his final years, leading the family on a ten-mile bike ride in St. Germain, just last summer.
Don and his sister, Barabara were raised in Walworth where he worked in the family grocery store on Kenosha Street. A graduate of Walworth High School in 1951, Don enlisted in the US Army in 1954 where he served as a Morse Interceptor in the Philippines. He also attended the University of Wisconin – Stevens Point where he met his future wife. Later on, he earned his Master Plumber certificate.
Don was united in marriage with Joyce Green on June 4, 1960. They spent the next 65 years happily together living in rural Walworth. They raised three children, Jeffry (Pamela) Shunk of Lexington, Kentucky, Pamela (William) Clark of Delavan, and Gregory Shunk of Waunakee.
After retiring as a Master Plumber for Heyer Hardware of Walworth and Barker Plumbing and Heating of Delavan, Don began to put his painting and woodworking skills to work by creating beautiful wildfowl carvings. He became a highly regarded wildlife artist with bird carvings exhibited at numerous art shows throughout the state. His carvings are proudly on display in homes throughout the United States, and as far away as Japan, Switzerland and Australia. When not fishing at his cabin in Minocqua, or riding his bike, Don could be found in his basement carving, woodburning and painting his latest masterpiece.
Don was a proud grandfather of six, Stephen, Meaghan, Katherine (Danny), Daniel (Turi), Jonathan (Sarah), and Timothy (Sophia), as well as great grandfather to Rory and Nora.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Blanche Shunk, and his sister, Barbara Shunk.
